Why UK is Safe Heaven For Indian Fugitives: A new book has come out on some high-profile cases of Extradition of Indian Citizens as well as lesser-known cases. With this, an attempt has been made to find out why Britain is a safe haven for people who have escaped from the law in India. A book titled ‘Escaped: True Stories of Indian Fugitives in London’ (Escaped: True Stories of Indian Fugitives in London) has been released. In this, 12 such cases have been mentioned, in which cases of wanted criminals in India, from non-payment of debt to murder, are going on.
This book has been written by Danish journalists and researchers from London and Ruhi Khan. The book also mentions the cases of Vijay Mallya, the former head of Kingfisher Airlines, and diamond merchant Nirav Modi. Those who have been accused of fraud and money laundering in India. Also, some historical cases including former Indian Navy officer Ravi Shankaran and musician Nadeem Saifi have also been mentioned in it.
Why these 12 people were elected
Danish Khan said, “These 12 cases have been chosen as the significance of the charges against the individuals because interesting arguments were made in the hearing of their cases and interesting verdicts were delivered.” As a journalist in London, the couple, who have been reporting recent court cases, said they have written about their own views and reported reporting (Indian Fugitives in London). Along with this, he has scrutinized the British records, old newspaper records and parliamentary reports.
Criminals set foot in London
Some of the earlier cases of extradition also mention Dawood Ibrahim, Iqbal Mirchi, who set foot in London when West Asia was the preferred destination for the underworld don and this proved to be true for him as he won the fight against extradition to India ( Why London is Safe for Fugitives). The authors said that in the book they have tried to shed light on how Mirchi had risen from the mohallas of Bombay and built her empire in London.
