Whether the occasion is small or big, it is not complete without cake.
These days home bakers are setting up all over India, while they can bake with dessert perfections, they often find it difficult to compete with established commercial bakeries. Most of these home bakers lack an online presence and often have limited access.
In 2019, IT professional Nitin Sharma and his wife Nitika Sharma, a chartered accountant, launched CanCest with the aim of providing a platform for home bakers that can help them work and thrive. With no prior culinary experience, the two saw the challenges facing home bakers and decided to help them.
Co-founder Nitin says,
“CanCest is a holistic and decisive platform for home bakers that helps them gain visibility, reach and business. We also help customers find home bakers for homemade customized cakes. “
Home bakers support
Says Nitika, “In India, about 98 per cent are domestic women. Women are honouring their talent in cooking and working from their homes with the aim of being independent and self-reliant. They use basic ingredients and equipment and use their hands to create delicious desserts. ”
Started on Instagram and Facebook in late 2018, CanCest launched a website and registered the company online in August 2019.
She says
“In every phase of the KCNEST process, such women are standing by and empowering them. The aim of the team is to improve their products from the baking process and every step of the way to promote their products. ”
The startup currently has over 1.9 lakh followers on Instagram and over 3,200 followers on Facebook.
According to the founders each Conquest baker has access to thousands of viewers, which helps them get the attention and visibility they deserve. KeyCanest experts provide quick and effective solutions to all issues, whether big or small.
How does it work?
A home baker can register on the CanCest platform on a quarterly or annual subscription. The startup then helps home bakers to establish their business presence online on social media platforms to generate more business.
For buyers, Cakenest serves as an on-demand homemade customized cake delivery platform. Customers can only contact the startup via message, WhatsApp or call and share their entire requirements including reference design, taste, quantity etc. with complete address for home delivery.
The team then looks for the right home baker in a nearby area who has experience relevant to the customer’s requirements and budget and is available to take orders.
Cake prices on the website for customers vary from city to city and every waste. On average it can range from Rs 1,500 per kg to Rs 4,000 per kg depending on design requirements.
Nitin says
“Theme-based custom homemade cake designs attract the younger generation as a special gift for their special gifts. Initially we saw orders coming predominantly from metro cities with high spending capacity, but during this period we have also seen an increase in demand for customized cakes from smaller cities as well. ”
Cakenest claims that its USP lies in giving a complete solution to a home baker so that they can focus on their main task – baking.
Revenue model
Cakenest makes its revenue from subscriptions, commissions and business solutions.
Nikita says
“We also work with non-cooperated bakers on a commission basis. We provide other business solutions including branding, advertising, packaging, promotion and development as per the requirement of home baker. ”
Several reports stated that the baking industry in India was worth 8 billion dollars in 2019 and is expected to grow rapidly.
In the midst of the epidemic, Keknest noticed a growing interest on its platform. As people started ordering from home bakers instead of bakeries due to hygiene and other factors, this increased business.
The platform also saw an increase in the number of collaborations with home bakers, as many people have begun to cook professionally during the lockdown.
Says Nitin, “We are offering our services to all major cities across India and expanding daily. There are over 200 home bakers collaborating with us from 50 different cities across India. We have served around 800 happy customers, including TV stars, IPL players and well-known bloggers. ”
The team claims that it will cross more than Rs 15 lakh in revenue in 2020.
Plan ahead
Over the next few years, Kakenist plans to expand its family of domestic bakers to around 500 and to expand its presence in about 100 cities in India.
